About
Dan Rumsey
"Dan Rumsey would have felt right at home
in the 1960s folk-blues scene. He is a raw, enthusiastic
yet spry bluesman." - Sing Out! Magazine Vol.47 #1
Spring 2003 Dan has been playing the guitar since 1974. His
style falls into the American Roots Tradition: Folk, Blues,
Jug Band, Old Country, Country Blues, Old Time, Gospel, and
the occasional glimmer of Jazz lingering from his fathers
love of that music. His influences include: Woody Guthrie, Doc
Watson and Mississippi John Hurt. He is also a songwriter. Dan
was a main stage performer at the 2004 Reso-fest at the Cedar
Cultural Center in Minneapolis, and placed 3rd at the 2004 Minnesota
Folk Festival New Folk songwriting contest.
Fellow musician Gabriela Sweet writes to him: I think
you must be a kind of shaman, really: you weave such a great
musical and spiritual THING when you play and sing. Playful
with an easy laugh, an audience can expect him to do the unexpected
as he transitions easily between musical genres, piecing together
his musical quilt. On piano, Dan has been described as "the
missing link between Ray Charles and Randy Neuman". His
harmonica, always handy per brother Marks guidance, is
full of nuance ala Sonny Terry and Little Walter.
Dan also plays the open back banjo, and mandolin, which his
Italian grandfather played. Dans voice, powerfully developed
from time spent street singing, offers hope and joy and beauty,
as well as bitter sweet observations. Early on, Dan played music
for youth groups, church functions and school dances. Presently,
he continues to host an Open Mic at the Riverview Café,
maintains an Old-Time and Folk Music Song Circle at the Ginkgo
Coffeehouse, And performs in the Twin Cities metro and Minnesota
area.
Dan perfomed at the Mahtawa Folk Festival 1999-2001 and also
in 2003. He was a finalist in the New Folk Songwriting Contest
at the Mn. Folk Festival, 2001 Dan has performed at the Minnesota
Resophonic Guitar Festival, 2001-2003 (mnreso.com)
Dan has shared stages with Jerry Rau, Ellis, Gabriela Sweet,
Charlie Parr and Lisa Kane. Dans first CD, "How
You Gonna Slow It Down?" Is on Dreamhorse Records.
A second CD is in the works.
